Lawrence Doyle; The Farmer Poet; Of Prince Edward Island
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Maine Pr (June, 1971)
Authors: Ed Ives and Edward D. Ives
Average review score:

A Classic of the Genre
Thirty years after its initial publication, Edward "Sandy" Ives' "Lawrence Doyle: the Farmer Poet of Prince Edward Island" remains the standard work on a folk poet whose writings were little known outside of his home region of eastern P.E.I. before this book's publication. Ives, who has also published standard works on two other Maritime Canadian folk poets (Larry Gorman of western P.E.I. and Joe Scott of New Brunswick) is recognized as the doyen of Eastern folklorists and his work here proves the point. Readers will quickly become embroiled in 19th P.E.I. political issues such as Confederationism, Reciprocity with the U.S.A. and out-migration in his treatment of Doyle's poem "Prince Edward Isle Adieu." The colour of local "Island" culture is richly revealed in his study of poems and songs addressed to the more limited audience of Eastern P.E.I. (such as "The Picnic at Groshaut" and "When Johnny Went Plowing for Kearnon"). More universal themes, such as the age-old conflict between the male and female of the species, are explored (delicately!) by Ives in his examination of "The Crooked Rib." It is Ives' almost unique ability to personalize this fascinating material, while giving it the thorough treatment of scientific historical/folkloric study, that sets him apart as a giant in his field. The book is emminently readable and will be a delight to the present generation who are 'meeting' Dr. Ives for the first time; be they folklorist, folk musicians, or home-sick Prince Edward Islanders.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti: Poet-At-Large

Author: Larry R. Smith

The man behind the bookstore that launched 1000 poets!
What can you say to a young person who wants to write? How about "Give a Reading!" If City Lights did not exist, there would be one very small list of titles coming out of San Francisco. I don't say that everyone that has gone to North Beach has eventually become a published author...but...when you even have a movie; like that of the Keefer Sutherland & "Captain America" (Easy Rider )which ends ( "starts-off") at The CITY LIGHTS BOOKSTORE in San Francisco, and Dennis Hopper is the "Beat" who finally makes it; it is a tribute, and should inspire the younger artists to give it a try-and tell all the "wiser" Bohemians to give it "another try!" Read the stuff from the guy that supported all the other struggling voices, and breath easy.

Lawrence of Arabia : the authorised biography of T.E. Lawrence
Published in Unknown Binding by Heinemann ()
Author: Jeremy Wilson
Average review score:

The Definitive Biography of a great hero.
I read this because of my great love of the movie. Interesting enough, this is the first time that the real life was far more interesting than the myth. What happened in Arabia might have been his coup de grace of achievements, but hardly the only aspect that makes him a ledgend. He was an archeologist, thinker, writer, humanitarian, culturalist, adventurist, and only a military genious by circumstance. This book makes it all clear and vivid.

I have read biographies before, but none that held on to my imagination so tightly while still using the historical records. I am only sorry that it has the unfortunate sub-title as authorized biography because many who think it will be a dry "whitewashed" examination of his life will miss a wonderful book. I can't heap praise on this book, and the life of T.E. Lawrence, enough. There might be books with far different and valid interpretations, but hardly as fun and interesting to read. The size of the book at nearly a thousand pages is worth every bit of paper printed on it. I guess I should congradulate the author for a fine presentation of a wonderful character.

Lawrence R. Koller's Shots at Whitetails: A Deer Hunting Classic (Deer & Deer Hunting Magazine Classics Series)
Published in Hardcover by Krause Publications (September, 2000)
Authors: Larry Koller, Patrick Durkin, and Lawrence R. Koller
Average review score:

Still hunter's bible
This book is the best deer hunting book in print for the Northeast still hunter. Written in the 40's, not much has changed. Big bucks still live the way they always have in these woods and the hunting tatics have not changed.

If you are a tree stand hunter hunting in farmland or small tracts, this is not the book for you.

If you hunt in the big woods, this is an excellent resource.

A must for history buffs
Just hold this book in your hands and you can feel the dedication and energy that went into preserving the history of the Lawrence Police force. Full of pictorials of officers past and present, you can see the changes in the uniforms, equipment and in the city in which these Heros Wearing Blue have dedicated there lives to. I would recommend this book to anyone that has a sense of patriotisim as much as this author has.
